Humans all face trauma, adversity and other stresses in life, that can transform the way in which we live and function. Everyone has their own narrative, their own way of dealing with tension and pressure. A common thread through adversity is human resilience.
Drawing on my own experience over the last 2 years, I have created a work that is imbued with an evocative response to my own resilience under a tense and difficult period.
Everyone deals with highly emotional and tense periods in their lives at some point. It is how we cope with these stresses that shape who we are.
One thinks they know their breaking point until one gets pushed beyond it. Human beings continually surprise themselves in how much pressure and tension they can endure. Resilience, the act of rebounding or bouncing back is something that we all possess in varying degrees. The aphorism “What does not kill me makes me stronger” sings true for many and in fact is used as a way of keeping one’s own existence intact.
The work includes 8 images that have been created using a combination of photographic techniques that include an outdoor, in studio photo shoots, experimental shadow work, found objects, medical equipment and post-production in photoshop. A dreamlike otherworldly quality exists throughout the series. Created by using a subdued monotone colour pallet, layering, silhouettes and mirrors that deliver reflective portals into possible scenarios.
The small, silhouetted figurines in the works are designed to add a suggestive narrative and anchor point from where to base the images intent.
The aim of this series is for the viewer to take the time to contemplate, question and interpret the series within their own lived experience and interpretation.
